The Australian Taxation office provides services to help people with disability including offering tax and superannuation information in a range of accessible formats.  Click here for more information

If you are receiving a disability or carer’s support you may be eligible for tax and superannuation concessions and exemptions

If you are managing the financial affairs of someone with a disability, it is best to understand what concessions and exemptions apply to them

Tax-free Government pensions and payments include:

  • Disability support pension
  • Child disability allowance
  • Carer adjustment payment
  • Veterans’ Affairs disabilities pension

 

Employer or super fund invalidity and disability payments - You may be entitled to a disability benefit payment if you suffer from physical or mental ill health and two medical practitioners certify that it is unlikely you can ever be gainfully employed in an area for which you are reasonably qualified

 

National Disability insurance scheme - NDIS payments are tax-free

 

Tax offsets

  • You may be entitled to a tax offset if you:
  • Are a senior australian or pensioner
  • Receive certain government allowances or payments
  • Maintain certain dependents or a carer
  • Are a low income earner
  • Tax offsets directly reduce the amount of tax payable on your taxable income
  • If you have a disability or care for a person with a disability, you may be eligible for certain tax-offsets

 

Tax concessions - You may be eligible for a tax concession when you buy, lease or modify a car with medical aids and appliances

 

Special disability trusts - Immediate family members and carers can set up a special disability trust to provide for the future care and accommodation needs of a person with a severe disability
